Bum Marketing – Why Bums Are Quickly Becoming Great Marketers.
I was looking for some inspiration to write this blog post today when I came across a few images that really got me thinking. Images of bums holding signs. But what I never realized before is that those bums are actually marketing themselves in order to survive.
What they put on their signs determines the first impression people get about them and will ultimately decide if that person gives them any money or not. In other words a bums sign is their advertisement.
That has got to be one of the most clever signs I’ve ever seen a bum holding. That one makes you think. But even more, I would definitely give that guy some change, maybe even a hot $5 dollar bill. Who knows.
The amount that I give to him doesn’t matter. It’s about WHY I would give him some money that matters.
Lets get inside some heads really quick. Picture yourself walking around the streets of San Francisco when all of a sudden this very bum is sitting directly in front of your path, you two make eye contact so there’s no avoiding confrontation.
You already know exactly what the bum is going to say to you. The typical “got any change?” or “spare a dollar?” but as you get closer he says nothing. Just stares you in the eye as the letters on his sign become more visible. Now you can read it.
“I’m Like Obama, I Want Change.”
At first read of the sign it makes you chuckle because it’s so clever. Never would you have thought a bum would be holding a sign like that. A couple seconds go by and you realize that you’ve been standing here staring at the bums sign for about 30 seconds now.
You see his little cup of money just chillin’ right next to the sign and figure
“Oh hey, what the heck. I’ve got a couple bucks in the pocket, why not give this guy a few. After all his sign did give me a good laugh.”
If you’re thinking what I’m thinking right now your brain you be going “AHH HA!” because that is EXACTLY the same thought process people go through when they are about to buy something. Something like your products or your affiliate promotion.
What they bum is doing here is actually quite genius. He’s taking a public figure, The President, and his slogan “Change We Can Believe In” and ties them into a double meaning.
Why does this work so well? Because of what the subconscious mind does when we say certain things. The President is somebody we all know and can relate to in some way. When people look at the sign and think of Obama you are probably going to get one of two answers. Either Oh I voted for that guy, I want change too. Or I didn’t vote for him or his change!
And because of the unique position the bum is in both trains of thought will help him out. We don’t know if the bum likes Obama or not and the sign can be interpreted as positive or negative so the ultimate decision is left for the subconscious mind.
What the subconscious mind does is take in all the information and then make a conclusion of the situation. So in this case if you are pro-Obama when you read the sign your subconscious mind will agree with the statement on the sign and tell you that the bum likes Obama too.
Now you two feel like there is something in common between you two. And thus you are now WAY more likely to give him some money. Same goes for the opposite.
