How To Snatch Any Twitter User Name You Want…
Alright, today’s post is going to get straight to the friggin’ point eh?!
So you are obviously here because you Tweet and you want to get that scrumptious @username you’ve been salivating over since day one. But it seems that day one came a little to late for you and someone got it first. This brief tutorial is going to show you exactly how you can get any Twitter username you want almost instantly, if you meet the ‘Twiteria’ that is…
I followed this process:
- Emailed username@twitter.com with the following information:
• The username you want
• Your existing username, if you have one
• Whether you want to change your username, or start a new account with the username you’re requesting - I received confirmation the email had been received a few minutes later, then another email asking me to reply with the above information (if I hadn’t already provided it).
- Literally, an hour later, I had my account switched to the username I desired.
Criteria for Reclaiming a Username on Twitter
While the process appears to have been improved, the same criteria allowing someone to gain access to a name seems to remain.
And here it is directly from “The Bird”…
“We generally have a 9 month rule; if a profile has been inactive for more than 9 months, we release the user name. In cases where the account has never been updated, Twitter can write the owner of the username about releasing it, but results vary.”
“Twitter does not release accounts to others, even in cases of TOS violations; we will, however, transfer a user name when necessary. In order to do this, you have to have an account ready for the user name transfer. This account should have an official email address from a company domain. Because it takes awhile to get to user name requests, we suggest that if you haven’t already, you create a new account with a temporary user name, and add the account information to your request. You may start using that account until we can transfer the user name.”
So basically what this means is that you can’t just claim any user name that you want because it looks cool. But what you can do is create an legitimate account that you actually plan on using for yourself or your business and once you have some solid proof of use you can follow the process above and get it switched over right away.
Tweet with purpose my friend, and you will go far.
Tweet with the intent to sell, pitch, recruit, seduce, spam, over promote, and/or to get more followers, and you will most certainly be “uncool”.
Always remember to…
Stack the cool,
Keep it real,
And we’ll speak soon,
Matthew Neer
PS. I thought I would throw a few shameless plugs up in here, since I just got done talking about how Tweeting with the intent to spam/sell makes you “uncool” (if you’re cool so it’s okay, lol)
