Why You Suck At Video Marketing!

View Comments

Okay, let’s be real for a minute. I’m sick and tired of seeing a friggin’ talking head on video. Even though I’ve been guilty of this same mistake in the past I don’t do it anymore. The only way you should be a talking head on video is if you are a REALLY good public speaker.

Great examples of this would be people like Tony Robbins, Randy Gage or Robert Kiyosaki. They can speak on camera all day and not sound redundant like most people do. Look, I don’t mean to be blunt but you know if you suck at video or not. And if you do, either practice until you get better at it or just don’t do it at all.

Now don’t let me get you down. There are plenty of other ways to create stunning videos online without having to actually talk on camera. I know how much of a fear that can be for some people. Sometimes people think that they are ugly, have a speech impediment, or don’t know how to work video correctly. Well I got good news for you, you are NOT uglier than this dude so my words of advice are GO FOR IT!

Here’s what you can do if you not good at public speaking…

• Create a screecast video. Also known as a screen capture. This is a simple technique that requires a software program that actually records the screen of your computer. You can find various different ones for Mac and PC like Camtasia which is for both or Screen Flow which is a sexy one for Mac only.

With a program like this you can effectively record your screen without fail every time. Screen Flow for the Mac even lets you do some cool 3D rotation effects in your videos which make for an extra polished look.

The format here is to basically walk your viewers through a on screen tutorial. Maybe you could show them how to use a Social Media site for example or maybe you could show them a cool tech savvy trick they didn’t know before. It’s up to you.

• Create a Keynote/Powerpoint presentation. This is probably one of the most widely used strategies for video because you get to capture your voice while showing slides. It becomes much easier to do than creating an actual live video of you talking because you can read from a script and practice it until you feel perfectly confident that it’s just the way you want it.

This is also one of the most powerful ways to deliver rock solid content to your viewer because a slide show always showcases information that is on point and direct to the subject you want your viewer to learn about. Use it all the time.

• Create a series of clips edited into one continuous video. This strategy is really one of the most direct ways to deliver a message simply because you speak directly to your viewer. Instead of being a talking head you speak one line or phrase at a a time, record it and then position it in line with the other previous clips to for a sequence of video that flow together delivering the message exactly as you want them to hear it.

This may be better if I give you a literal example of how this is supposed to look in real life. Plus, if I did a post about video and I didn’t use video then that would be kind of crazy huh? So here’s one I did a while  back about The Death Of TV Advertising.

  • Matt, this is an absolutely amazing post. It's so true about the talking head, but I gotta tell you, I don't like your picture at all. LOL I find it hard to look at !!!!

But seriously, you're so right about people seeing things on TV and thinking it's the truth. So glad to hear your take on this and that it is on the exit!

Thanks, once again for your great advice. You're always a pleasure to listen to!

  • I really digg the content in this video. As said earlier you really hit the nail on the head with what is hot at the moment. But like you said, what's hot right now might not be hot tomorrow. Keep it up!
  • That's right, you've basically got to be able to see trends rising and falling. Then when you find a hot one, like Social Media. (hint hint) Go after the darn thing full force.
  • Alright matt gotta say i love the stutter-editing, it keeps the eyes engaged. Course i almost fell off my chair when you zoomed in suddenly lol! but that goatee kept drawing my attention away. if it gets any bigger you'll be doing the Dave Navarro.
  • LOL! The goatee is meant to entice people ;) Glad you loved the video!
  • great insights here bro! Taking us along the journey of how advertising has changed was a great idea!

You're doing an awesome job with educating people and letting them know that anyone can succeed in video marketing! Hell, all video is is just a medium to allow us to converse better with people.

We need to be more innovative and become the outliers like you mentioned and are doing. Entrepreneur with skateboard = you! You're doing a great job with branding yourself and educating your audience.

Great article + video bro. If you need anything, you have my info :)
  • Thanks bro, it's all about combining your passion with business. Nothing can make you stand out more from the heard.
  • Okay, Matthew, You've got a great idea when it comes to video marketing. I'm one of those who needs help as a "talking head". I'll try your idea of putting short clips together. That might just be a perfect way to get comfortable in front of the camera. Either that, or where's the TelePrompter?
  • Most definitely, it's a really easy technique to master. Most computers come with the basic video editing software you need to do that. Plus it lets you focus all your energy into little bit sized snippets that pack a punch!
  • this is good stuff... maybe the best stuff in the net.... today....
  • Bold words my friend, bold words.
  • What an Excellent Post and Video my friend! You certainly have your finger on what's hot and what's not! I am always amazed with the value & content you offer to your followers. As a young entrepreneur, you stand out as Seth Godin would say like a "Purple Cow."

We're looking forward to working with you more!

P.S. The video editing was SUPERB!
  • Why thank you kind sir, I had a ton of fun putting that video together.
  • Great tips Matthew, I know what you mean. I've never been all that flash in front of a camera, so getting creative is a must if I really need to do it.

The last point you made works very well. No need to try and remember what you want to say, rush things and talk without purpose - instead you can collect your thoughts and put all your energy into short, sharp bursts and give your message in a composed, meaningful way.

    Good work mate. Cheers, Justin.
  • You just hit that nail on the head Justin. It works extremely well. Plus it's REALLY easy to do once you play with it a few times...
