How To Become A Chieftain Of Networking

View Comments

One of the hardest things for people to do in life is overcome their feelings of fear and doubt to really step into their true potential and become a leader, or in this case we are going to call them a Chieftain.

You see, throughout time the human species has formed tribes as a means for survival. With out tribes to protect each other humans would have slowly faded from existence.

The leader of the tribe. The Chieftain, is both more mentally and physically strong than the rest of the tribe members. He protects them, and in exchange for the protection his tribe follows his lead.

Because of tribes and the Chieftains protection humans were able to reproduce and pass those traits on through millions of generations leading up to current times.

Today, these qualities of leadership and tribes still exist today. You witness it everyday when you walk down the street.

Have you ever tried to look someone directly in the eyes as your cross paths? The person who breaks eye contact first is NOT the Chieftain of their tribe. In other words you asserted a more dominant presence over the other person, they felt it, and broke eye contact first.

In this particular case the person who broke eye contact is more likely to follow the person that didn’t. Establishing that person as the leader subconsciously in their minds.

How This Applies To Networking

If you want thousands of people to follow you, you have to show your followers that you are capable of leading them into greatness. People don’t join companies, they join people.

Be the person they want to be so they can get a little piece of your power/value by association with you.

Think about celebrities and the entourage. Why do celebs have a group of fans flocking to their every movement?

Because those fans gain a little bit of “coolness” by association with the celebrity. The same thing works in business.

If you’re a Networking Chieftain, you are going to be sought after. You are going to be pursued for your knowledge.

It basically comes down to this, if you want others to follow you increase your knowledge so that you can offer 100x times more value then they can. At that point it will become obvious who the expert is, who the leader is, and who the Chieftain is.

Go out there today, not tomorrow and step into your true potential. You have what it takes to do whatever you want in life.

The only thing holding you back is yourself.

    Right On Mr Neer!

People want to be led, they want to learn, and they want to be secure. If you can help them accomplish these 3 things, then they will follow you. I learned long ago that there are 2 ways to rise above the crowd. One is to cut everyone else off at the knees. That is quick, but expensive in the long run and not easily defended. Your knees are always next. Alternatively, you can raise up all those around you and find yourself propped up on their shoulders. Much more value to be had in the latter approach.

  2. By supplying quality content, you will by definition become the expert and people will start following you, thus making you the leader. Well put. And if you approach it this way, becoming a leader is not nearly as difficult. Simply focus on quality contributions…

    Hey Matthew,

Great point, everyone is good at something. It's all about positioning yourself as an expert and if you really are good at what you do and the way you communicate then people will want to follow you.

I have tried the eye contact thing with strangers in the past while walking my dog. It's funny I found myself looking away first. Then I realised I was also waiting for the other person to smile first, if they didn't smile first I wouldn't smile back I would just keep walking. I think I was afraid that if I smiled at them that they wouldn't smile back.

So I tried something different, I smiled at everyone I walked past and it was amazing the difference in their facial expressions. Ok so they weren't following me home like the pied piper but it was a really good exercise in practicing leadership skills in the real world!

Don't let fear hold you back, step up and be the leader!

    Cheers,
    Lynn
