What the heck is Square?

Oh, why I’m so glad you’re curiosity has brought you to this post today and that you wanna know more about the future of business.

As you know, the economy sucks. (well, at least for some people) But what that has done is created a massive surge of people looking for new ways to make money as more and more get fired from their jobs. The first place people turn is the Internet these days and start asking Google some questions, some of the most common search queries being “how to make money online” or “start a home based business”.

Either way, what this is creating is a wave of self employed entrepreneurs who work for themselves. Only trouble is sometimes people have a hard time accepting payments from debit cards or credit cards because those damn credit card processors cost an arm and a leg, plus they are big and bulky and just flat out inconvenient.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could simply just bust out your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or even your MacBook Pro and accept a credit card payment right there on the spot, have your client sign for it, and email them a receipt instantly?

Sounds down right impossible doesn’t it?

Well, if you know me by now you’ll know I’m always on the cutting edge of technology and all the cool stuff you can do with it.

With over 100 new features the iPhones new Operating System, iOS4 has brought a TON of new possibilities to the iPhone and the smart phone world.

In this review of the new iOS4 I am going to cover all the most exciting new features and then I’ll give a little insight as to how they can be applied to help in business and overall having more fun out of life with the new iPhone and iOS4.

First thing that dropped in this massive update was the long awaited multitasking. I can’t tell you how long this update has been awaited, people have been craving this since the beginning. Now you can run all your favorite third party apps without slowing the the performance of the main app running or draining the battery like crazy.

The second really big update is the ability to put apps into folders. Now you can arrange apps into folders or groups with a simple drag and drop ease. This will help you manage and group apps into one place that have similar functions, for instance, I’m going to put all my financial apps into one folder and all my games into another.

You got even better email with iOS4. Now you can see messages from all of your accounts in one inbox account, you can organize them by thread, or open attachments and third party apps.

Just like what you saw get released on the iPad, the iPhone is now getting the iBook Store. Now you can read all of your favorite books right there on your iPhone without having to worry about lighting, carrying the darn book, or even loosing your place because the iPhone will always remember where you last left off.

Another really cool update is Faces And Places In Photos which allows you to view photos based on who is in them and where they were taken. Now that is something truly revolutionary and will most likely change the way we take pictures forever.

But that’s not the most amazing thing the new iPhone has to ofter. Not don’t get me wrong, what I’m about to tell you will only work in the new iPhone 4, not just the iOS4 update. The new iPhone 4 has a built in camera on the FRONT of the phone thus allowing you to do a video chat with anyone, face to face, anytime over a WiFi connection.

And THAT will be changing the way to talk on the phone, FOREVER…

Now I know all you Baby Boomers out there think I’m crazy I want you to think about this from a business perspective. I know you probably love to physically hold a book and read because that’s what you were raised with. But think for a moment what if you were raised reading on an iPad or Kindle or something similar like that?

Would you still have a love for books like to do now?

I was just thinking about this from a business perspective and it makes WAY TO MUCH SENSE to eliminate printing and distributing books when you look at it this way.

You see, printing a book and getting it in a book store and all of that stuff costs A LOT of money. It costs money to print the ink on paper, it costs money for the truck driver to drive to the bookstore and deliver the books and it costs money and space once its in the bookstore to be there.

While books are great and I love reading them myself lets just wake up and face the reality that books will not be around forever. And here’s why…

The Internet has changed the way content is being delivered. I’m sure by now you have heard of an eBook and are fully aware that eBooks are essentially real books in PDF format and you’ll know that they sell for money every single day.

Now, here it is from a business standpoint. Books costs a lot of money to make and distribute. Ebooks cost virtually nothing except for the time that goes into writing and creating them. You can then offer them as a digital download online for people who buy them.

By doing this, you will make a larger profit, there is no cost to create the book or anything shitty like that and you will inevitably make a larger profit. So from a business perspective it just makes more sense for books to eventually stop being produced. And if the world is to ever become a global economy this is simply just whats going to happen.

With that said, let’s stop fighting technology and the fact that is makes our lives easier and more profitable at the same time. Let’s embrace these kind of changes with open arms so we can benefit from the new improvements they bring to society and our world.

I seriously think that my children and my children’s children will all have iPad’s or similar devices on which they do all of their school work on. And when they need to read a chapter in the book or take a test they will just download it on their iPad and do it there.

I mean, why wouldn’t you? It makes perfect sense for the teacher and the student to totally synchronize a class and make things so much more streamlined.

As I was driving home from a great skate sesh today I was going by Blockbuster and couldn’t help but notice the parking lot looked awfully empty. And as a young kid I remember going specifically to that exact Blockbuster to get movies and video games and it was ALWAYS packed.

But then what happened?

The world figure out how to download video games, movies, and even software. And as many thought that was going to be the downfall of video stores around the world like Blockbuster, but it wasn’t. The big hand of government swept in and regulated that.

Which, in my opinion only hinders the advancement of technology as a whole. I say instead of regulating and preventing something, instead you say find a new way to monetize your digital media. Instead of putting in into a store, you will have to figure out a way to sell it online.

By the government stepped in and basically said that it is now illegal to download movies off the Internet for your viewing pleasure. It made it easier for the big media companies to keep swallowing down the profits. Big movies already do multimillion dollar launches like nothing by showing it in a theater and people will always gladly pay to go see a movie there cause of the experience it gives.

But a lot of times, now people won’t go out and buy the movie simply because they can download it online once its been in the theaters for about a month. Yet they still go see it in theaters first.

Now the only problem with downloading a movie is that you can’t always be 100% sure of the quality. But if you know what you’re doing you can usually find a good one. But still, there was a gap to be filled here. A gap of quality control at an affordable price. A gap where a lot of money could be made if it was properly filled.

Guess who filled that gap?

Netflix! Netflix filled that gap. They offer a service that gives people the option to get a new DVD shipped to their house every single day for 9 bucks, monthly. And you can also watch the video streaming online. This service in itself solved a big problem of illegal downloading. While you won’t ever be able to completely eradicate pirated movies simply because the technology to rip them exists. Somebody is always going to be that.

But you can offer a service and solution to the general public and charge them money for it as long as it’s completely reasonable. And I think 9 bucks per month is MORE than affordable and reasonable for what Netflix is offering.

And guess who else has been popping up at every single convenience store around the world?

RedBox. RedBox is one of the best ideas and companies since Blockbuster. You can actually rent any new release for 1 dollar per day. One dollar per day. Wow. Great deal. You just swipe your debit code and pick your flick. And if you decide to keep it longer than a day then its only a dollar more per day you have it.

Come to think of it, I’ve got a really cool tip for you to use to get a FREE RedBox movie one time. When you’re renting a RedBox just select rent with a promo code and type in BREAKROOM and your rental is free. Come back and leave me a comment, let me know if it worked.

But as far as Netflix goes they are a great service too. You can try Netflix for a month free and get as many movies as you’d like that month as well.

Google has recently released a phone called the Nexus One, and compared to the rest of the smart phones on the market right now it takes the cake.

The phone itself has one of the best UI’s out right now, even compared to the iPhone.

The Nexus One is a phone that just makes sense. It feels so nice to the grasp of your hand.

However, the reason why The Nexus One is top dog right now is because it’s owning the market. It’s by far the fastest phone out there right now, it almost doubles the speed of the iPhone. As I was munching down on a delicious tuna melt today I glanced over at the news paper (which I hardly ever read) and saw the infamous Google logo blasted on the front page. So naturally, a tech savvy 20-something guy like me HAD to pick it up.

If I didn’t it would have been like a nerd reading comic books without glasses…

Google’s Plan For World Domination

Anyways, Google is looking for some new guinea pigs to test out some powerful new fiber optics capable of 1 gigabit per second. That’s 100x times faster than the Internet you are using right now.

Apparently this is making the nation run wild with excitement and causing people to commit random acts of stupidity, YouTube videos, Facebook fan campaigns and more.

• Locally here in Fresno our mayor Ashley Swearengin has been a Facebook fan campaigner.

• In Duluth, Minn the mayor jumped into 35° Lake Superior water to get Google’s attention.

• Topeka, Kansas even temporarily renamed the city Google!

Man, I can’t help but think people are freakin’ crazy for Google. While Google is an awesome company I can’t help but think there must be some alterior motives behind Google’s strategic move of their Queen piece.

You see, if Google installs and owns the faster fiber optic networks in the world, or for now just in the USA then they could not only command any price they wanted but they would systematically shut Comcast and DSL out of business creating one of the most ingenious Monopolies in the history of the world.

And that would make Google not only the largest Internet based company but the largest ISP in the world. And what could be smarter for the Internet mogul than to literally control the Internet?

I’m not saying these are Google’s intentions because they claim it is going to be an open service, meaning they want to share it with other ISPs, but I’m not saying they’re not either…

I just find it rather suspicious that Google is keeping extremely hush hush about their operations in this area. Hardly any specifics have been given.

Back To Reality

There is a lot of misunderstanding of what Google Fiber actually is. It’s not like if you get this in your local city that you will instantly see lightening fast speeds of 1 gigabit per second because speeds would likely only be realized within the network itself and data coming in off servers located outside the network would experience a bottleneck type of effect.

However, on the bright side the creation of an ultra high speed network would stimulate the growth and development of “super apps”. This would show the rest of the world and businesses that it was worth building and hopefully would make other companies pick up the ball and throw.

Google wants to create financial justification for the rest of the industry with this project. The creation of such a high speed network would result in things like streaming HD video, remote data storage, and long distance learning and real time multi-media collaboration that most people can’t even fathom right now.

But for those of you that work in your underwear like I do everyday, it’s already a reality for you. And probably feel like it should have been done already. Be patient my friend, it is coming…

Another Google Speculation

Since we already have thousands of WiFi hot spots, how hard would it really be to make the entire Internet go wireless?

I mean, when the world converted from dial-up to cable we had to tear up streets, destroy trees and backyards, costing hundreds of man hours. And not only that but the transition was completed only a few years ago. Now Google wants to repeat the process with bigger wires?

Aren’t we at the point in technology where we don’t need to be hardwired anymore?

Cell phones do it. My iPhone can get on the Internet just about ANYWHERE in the world without a problem. So why can’t we do that for computers around the world too?

Wouldn’t it just be a means of upgrading the cell towers to support a faster WiFi signal?

Then again maybe technology isn’t at the point to support a gigabit per second over WiFi? Or is it?

This is not going to be some review of how great the Apple iPad is, while I love Apple and their products I believe they cut us short on this release. Of course I’m going to cover the facts and features of the iPad but I’m also going to look at why I think Apple under delivered.

January 28th Apple Launch The Infamous iPad.

They unveiled the sexy lookin’ thing and people were speechless at how great it look. It was thin and light weight, delivered 10+ hours of battery life and even had a special A4 chip Apple designed specifically for the iPad.

Now you can browse the web beautifully on a magnificent 10″ inch screen that really does the Internet some justice. You can browse with Safari in full multi-touch and really be able to read stuff compared to how small the iPhone screen is.

One of the most impressive features the iPad brings to life is the full qwerty on screen keyboard. It’s basically a giant iPhone keyboard but with the ability to type with two hands. This makes it a powerful new tool when doing mobile computing.

Photos on the iPad look absolutely stunning and the multi-touch functionality really comes out here. You are now able to pinch the photos open and peak instead to see if what you looking for is in there. You can also scale, rotate, and zoom like always.

Video on the iPad is stunning with HD video support you can play movies right there on your iPad from the comfort of your lap. YouTube is also integrated into the iPad making is a seamless video playback machine except for one MAJOR flaw, Flash video. Still can’t do it.

Music functions just the same way on the iPad like it would on the iPod touch or iPhone. You just upload your music through iTunes and drag and drop it onto the device. iTunes integrates nicely as well with the iPad letting you buy your favorite TV shows, movies, and other media.

The App Store has a little bit of a new twist with the iPad. First off, all the previous apps will work on the iPad including games. (which makes for an awesome experience) Now there will be apps specifically designed for the iPad which make full use of it’s larger screen size and multi touch features.

Apple has even added a new addition to the App Store called the iBook store. This is similar to Amazon’s Kindle store where you can buy, download, and read except that Apple’s version has a digital bookshelf. (I dunno how you compete with that)

Native Apps like Notes, Contacts, and Calendar have all been completely redesigned to accommodate the iPads larger screen and more touch sensitive functionality.

Why Apple Under Delivered

Honestly, Apple could have done WAY better here. And I think they already have and they are only releasing it to use in bit size morsels in order for them to make the biggest amount of profit possible. I believe it’s that way with all technology these days, if you look at Japan they will literally laugh at where we are in the technology game. There are about 3-5 years ahead of the curve in the USA, iPhones and tablets are almost boring over there.

But that’s not why Apple under delivered. They under delivered because the iPad is basically just a giant iPod Touch. There I said it. A giant iPod Touch.

Who the fuck wants that? (I know I don’t)

I was expecting OSX. I was expecting a full functioning computer. I was looking for a MacBook Pro without the keyboard. But it just doesn’t compare to that. Apple is still making it like a “play” device. I want something that I can get some serious work done on. I want something that I can walk into a presentation with that will do the whole show and wow everyone.

I thought the iPad was going to be just that. But upon closer inspection, it just doesn’t come close.

We are still lacking Flash support. That means the web still isn’t full accessible through the device. Google and the Nexus One did it. It’s got Flash support among many other outstanding features that I would have liked to see in the Apple iPad.

Yet another major defect is that lack of a camera. We are in the 21st century guys, come on! I would have thought a camera would have been the least to ask, but it still doesn’t have one. Now I can give a little forgiveness on this one because of it’s size it might be a little awkward when trying to take a picture. But I mean, it’s Apple. I know they could have found a super creative way to incorporate a camera.

But the biggest let down of them all is this one. Multi-tasking. The iPad won’t be able to multi-task, meaning it won’t be able to run more than one app at a time. Now if you browsing the web and you see something you want to copy and paste from a website into your notes of possibly into an email, you will have to close the app, open the new one, do what ya gotta do, close that one, and get back to the web. What a waste of time?!

And to put the icing on the cake, it can’t even make phone calls…

For all of this they are asking $499

Come on Apple, step your game up. You can do better than this.

Google Voice Bypasses Apple’s Blockade

If you’ve been an iPhone user for awhile now you probably remember the Google Voice app that surfaced in Apples App store for a brief period of time only to get blocked by Apple very quickly. As you could imagine, Google did not take very kindly to this gesture.

And now they have released Google Voice as a web based application leveraging HTML5 and can be accessed by the iPhone’s Safari browser. Simply go to http://google.com/voice. Currently Google is only accepting invitations only, but the app will soon be open to the public and you can always request an invite as well.

Google Voice works on iPhone 3.0 OS and higher, let’s users send and receive text messages for free, and uses the Google Voice number as a outbound caller ID so you can receive return calls straight to your iPhone. You can even call international at Google Voice discounted rates.

The app has an AppCache feature that lets users interact with the Internet without a network connection. You can even store data locally on your device and add shortcuts to the home screen of the dialer, inbox, and contacts for a more ‘app like’ feel.

Google Voice offers a more app like experience with speeds matching those of a native app on the iPhone. But there still is a big difference between a real iPhone app and a web based application. For example, you won’t have access to certain components of the iPhone like your contacts, therefore you would have to create a second duplicate version for use on the web.

But on the other hand, this means that you are not tied to your device. You could make calls from anyone’s phone with an Internet connection if you iPhone got misplaced somehow.

Are Apps A Thing Of The Past?

Now that Google Voice has bypassed Apples blockade of their application is this starting a new trend?

iPhone apps have only been around for a short amount of time. (about 1 1/2 years) and they have created all the rage in the marketplace. They have even inspired other mobile device companies to develop apps like Blackberry and Android. But with the coming of HTML5, and coding language that aims to reduce the needs of plugins like Adobe Flash, Microsoft, Sunlight, and Sun Java we may be seeing a massive decline in native iPhone apps and be moving in the direction of web based applications.

With HTML5 you can now build a single application with HTML and Javascript and have it work across virtually all mobile operating systems without having to code it specifically to each device’s custom firmware.

However, it’s still important to point out that desktop computers went through this phase a few years ago. While many applications like Aviary may be exceptionally cool and work great they still don’t come anywhere close to comparing with Photoshop, Dreamweaver, or Final Cut Pro which are software apps.

My prediction is that you will see mobile devices move in the same direction. Keeping apps that do powerful tasks, similar to Photoshop and Final Cut Pro native to the iPhone where as simpler things like Google Voice will become all web based applications.

AT&T Is Getting Scared Stiff

Google Voice may be a beautiful app for iPhone users but it’s going to cause AT&T some major problems in the near future as well as any other phone company who relies on customers to purchase a calling plan from them month to month. That form of business is coming to an end and AT&T just needs to accept it.

You see, with Google Voice iPhone users will never have to pay for anything other than a data plan ever again. They can simply make calls for free over the Internet. This type of technology has existed for many years now and has been vigorously fought against by all the major phone companies like AT&T because they know it’s going to cut their business in half.

Then they won’t be able to pay their CEO’s 7 figure salaries anymore. What a shame…

I’m still not sure what to expect from AT&T though, because if they attack this app then it’s going to be obvious they are scared and will make them out to be the bad guys instead of Apple banning the app in the first place.

The Big Problem With Mac’s

If you are into technology then you know that 95% of computer users have PC’s. Microsoft pretty much dominates the market. And that is not a bad thing. But the problem is most people out there in the world today don’t understand what makes a Mac a Mac.

This is a growing epidemic.

I cannot tell you how many people I come across who say they hate using a Mac. And then I simply ask them “Have you ever used one before?” They usually say no.

How can you say you think something is no good when you haven’t even tried it out for yourself?

In reality, a Mac is by far the easiest computer to use. It’s labeled as grandparent friendly. Now I don’t know about you but I could never picture a grandparent learning how to use a PC, they would just run into way to many problems. But on a Mac however, it would be a breeze because Apple Computers designs their products to be extremely user friendly. In fact, that is what they spend the most time developing, the user interface.

I am actually writing this article right now on my first MacBook Pro that I have ever owned. And it is very interesting how I came upon this one. You see, before this computer I had one of those Dell Widescreens and it was great. But my business partner had a nice brand new 17″ MacBook Pro and I was super jealous.

So one day after we had just got done doing a video shoot for a client, I was loading up all the gear into my car and had set my laptop down against the back wheel of my car. Finished loading everything else up and then proceeded to back out. Next thing I know I run over a huge bump, which felt like I had just ran over a child or something. I was tripping out. So I get out of my car in a hurry only to find that I had done none other than run straight over my Dell. That thing was crushed almost in half. Absolutely no chance of survival.

Ironically, about a week before this happened my bank had issued me a new credit card for Neer Design, my web design business with something like a $2000 dollar limit. So I don’t know if this was fate but you better believe a week later I had a brand new MacBook Pro in my hands, and as soon as I pressed that crisp power on button I vowed never to use a PC ever again. The Mac was just was to clean. I mean it looks absolutely stunning. It is probably the fastest computer I have had yet. And if you really love windows all that much you can run XP or Vista on it. And for that reason alone, no one should ever get a PC again. Because why get a PC when you can get a Mac and have the best of both worlds. Mac made this possible because they have recently switched from their Power PC chips to Intel chips which allows them to run the same architecture as a PC.

Now that I have my Mac, I am able to so many things with such ease that I was not able to do with a PC before. Or at least without experiencing plenty of problems along the way. One of the most lucrative features about the Mac is that they cannot receive viruses. Well I shouldn’t say can’t, you can sure as hell get one if you are running Windows on your Mac. But than that, viruses do exist for the Mac, but they are so rare to come by, that it is not really a big issue.

I just want to make one more point. If you are involved in design in any way shape or form. You need a Mac. That is what they are built for. Mac’s are literally the industry standard for producing Hollywood movies, music, special effects and everything else like that. So if you haven’t tried one out yet, it’s about time you run over your PC so you have no choice but you get a Mac.

Hey there, whats going on my friend!

Today I’ve got an awesome trick for you on how jailbreak your iPhone 3G or 3GS. This is the EASIEST jailbreak on the Internet right now, not to mention the fastest. Once your done watching this video you will have your iPhone jailbroken and ready to go in less than 5 minutes.

In the past you may have been hesitant to jailbreak your iPhone because you were scared it would mess your iPhone up for good, or you’d do something wrong and void your Apple Care warranty. Well let me just say this, your Apple Care warranty will only be void if you bring the iPhone in while it’s still jailbroken. All you have to do to remove the jailbreak is do a simple restore with iTunes and no one will be able to tell.

• Games – NES, Sega, Playstation
• Custom Themes, Ringtones, Alerts
• 3G = Video Camera
• Basically anything the App Store doesn’t have

Here are some visual aids from the video to help you get accustom to your new jailbreak software.

The blackra1n icon will appear on your iPhone (left) as soon as you restart it. All you will need to do is click on that icon and install both Rock and Cydia. They are your jailbroken app stores and both contain hours upon hours of new apps entertainment you’ve never seen before.

Then once you see the blackra1n icon you will need to click on it which will take you to the screen like the one on the right. There you can install both Rock, Cydia, and Snow.

Snow is only if you want to unlock your iPhone to run on an service. Otherwise you will just need Rock and Cydia to start installing some new apps.

Anyways, I hope this tutorial helped you out and you now have a jailbroken iPhone to play with all day.
